According to American writer Henry Miller, “One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.” You will see your destination Indonesia as a cultural phenomenon like no other. Indonesia – a country of timeless natural beauty, unique and diverse vibrant cultures is the world’s largest archipelagic country. Boasting eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites, it flaunts not only the magnificent Borobudur Stupa that stands tall as the world’s biggest Buddhist monument, it houses many of the world's most ancient wonders – sacred temples to palace ruins and the Sangiran Early Man Site where the first hominid fossil was discovered. The country is gifted with picturesque, mystifying rice terraces some of which date back to 500 years ago. It is the birthplace of the ancient form of storytelling, the unique form of shadow puppet theatre Wayang Kulit that was designated by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity on 7 November 2003.

Consisting of 17,508 islands formed from volcanic eruptions of which only 6000 are inhabited, the archipelago spans 5,120 km across the Equator and is spread across between the Pacific and the Indian Oceans and between the continents of Asia and Australia. Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Maluku and Papua are the most well-known islands of the country. With diverse landscapes - from grand mountains to luxuriant rainforests, from snow-capped peaks to savannah grasslands, panoramic volcanoes to pristine beaches that fringe the islands, Indonesia has the second largest biodiversity in the world with a large number of unique flora and fauna. The central region shelters endemic species such as orangutans, tigers, one-horned rhinos, elephants, dugongs, anoas and komodo dragons. It is home to various species of insect trapping pitcher plant, the exceptional parasitic Rafflesia arnoldi which is the largest flower in the world, the giant Amorphophallus tatinum that has the largest inflorescence of its kind and a myriad of orchids. A legion of fish, coral species and marine mammals are nurtured in the rich marine environment.

The rich art and culture of Indonesia is shaped around its various ethnic groups and is influenced by Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism and Islam. Festivals steeped in traditions are celebrated throughout the year which showcases epic dances, wayang theaters and other performing arts. Music plays an important role. The traditional ensemble music of Indonesia, gamelan, is played with a set of hand-played drums called kendhang, bamboo flutes and rebab (bowed instrument).

Artistic by nature, the Indonesians express themselves on canvas, wood, metals, clay and stone. Batik, wooden carvings, weavings, silverworks and many other traditional skills passed on through generations produce exquisitely beautiful items.

Indonesia is known for its culinary delicacies. Full of intense flavor, the cuisine uses a wide variety of vegetables, grains, fruits, nuts, legumes and fish. Each area in Indonesia has its own traditional food but Nasi Goreng (richly flavored stir-fried rice) is considered to be the national dish.
