Penang, a Malaysian island state off the country’s west coast, is known for its beaches, colonial architecture, and vibrant culture. It’s also a major food destination, with a hawker scene that’s considered one of the best in Southeast Asia.
Penang Island is served by Penang International Airport (PEI), which is located in Bayan Lepas. There are direct flights to Penang from many major cities in Asia, including Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Bangkok, and Hong Kong. You can also fly into Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) and then take a connecting flight to Penang.
From the airport, you can take a taxi, ride-sharing app, or public bus to George Town, the capital city of Penang.
The best way to get around George Town is on foot or by trishaw (a bicycle rickshaw). You can also rent a bicycle or motorbike to explore the island. If you’re planning on doing some sightseeing outside of George Town, you’ll need to take a taxi or ride-sharing app.
There are a variety of accommodation options in Penang, to suit all budgets. If you want to be in the heart of the action, stay in George Town. There are plenty of hotels, guesthouses, and hostels to choose from.
If you’re looking for a more relaxed beach vacation, stay in Batu Ferringhi or Tanjung Bungah. These areas have a good selection of resorts and hotels.
Penang has a tropical climate, with hot and humid weather year-round. The best time to visit is during the dry season, which is from December to February.
However, this is also the peak tourist season, so expect higher prices and more crowds. If you prefer to avoid the crowds, consider visiting Penang during the shoulder season, which is from March to May and September to November.
